It’s so surprising to see how ignorant people can be when it comes to buying insurance. Many of them just buy insurance because they feel like it’s a must and they don’t even bother to try and understand the policy. These people often find disappointment at the time they try to file a claim only to find out that it cannot be processed because it’s not covered by the insurance.
That’s why it’s important for us to understand the policy completely whenever we purchase any kind of insurance. There are many limitations in a standard health insurance policies, therefore if you think that you have risks for some kind of health issues that are not covered yet in the policy, you can negotiate with the insurer to include them in the policy. If possible, the insurer will be able to arrange that for you by of course adding extra charge on your premium.
Generally, the limitations or exclusions in standard health insurance policies include:
Maternity – In an individual or family floater policy, maternity is usually not included. However, it becomes a standard in most group health insurance policies.
Diseases that occurs within the first 30 days of the policy – Some people buy health insurance policies right after they found out about a disease they have that requires a lot of money. This is done to protect the insurer from such consumer.
Certain diseases and specific health related costs – There are actually quite many diseases that are not covered in a standard health insurance policy, these are considered non-negotiable conditions by most insurance providers, including fertility issues, hysterectomy, self inflicted injuries, alternate treatments, drug addictions, congenital disorders, tonsils and sinus, kidney stones, rheumatism, gout, fistula, piles, hernia, prostate, cataract, HIV/AIDS etc. Certain medical and health related costs are also not covered, such as contact lenses, dental treatment, and cosmetic surgeries.
Pre-existing diseases – These are diseases that you already have before you apply for health insurance. Whether you have been aware or not of this condition, it doesn’t really matter. Further complications that occurs due to these pre-existing conditions are also not covered by the insurance.
Day Care – There are actually a few insurance companies that cover day care and usually the premium is quite high. But most insurance companies don’t provide such coverage.
War Related Health Issues – Any health problems or injuries that occur from war.
Abortion – Any abortion related expenses or health problems are not covered in a health insurance policy.
